Alan O'Riordan
Principal Investigator
Tyndall National Institute
Dr Alan O’Riordan (Tyndall National Institute; Sensor-PI; male, h-index 21) is a Senior Research Fellow at the Tyndall National Institute. He is an analytical chemist and leads a team of twenty researchers and support staff. His research is focused on developing solid-state sensitive and scalable smart sensors & systems. He is actively involved in National and International (EU, US-Ireland) projects, coordinating many of them, and has competitively won >€10M in research funding. He has graduated 11 PhD students, authored or co-authored >80 articles in various journals and conferences, has >1,500 Google Scholar citations and actively participates in various conferences and received a number of awards. He is an adjunct senior lecturer at Cork Institute of Technology, on the Steering Board Committee of Smart Systems Integration conference (European Platform of Smart Systems) and on the Editorial Board of the Journal “Biosensors” (IF 3.571). He is also a funded investigator in the SFI CONNECT research Centre. His group is active along the entire sensor development chain including: (i) Fundamental Science - theoretical simulations (analyte diffusion, electric fields), (ii) Nanofabrication – design and fabrication of reliable and robust nanostructured sensor devices, (III) Sensor modification - materials composition and surface chemical and biochemical modification and (iv) System integration -combining our advanced nanosensors with bespoke (or commercial) electronics and software. Alan is lead for Platform 1 (sensors) in VistaMilk, wherein he (co-)supervises two postdoctoral researchers and two PhD students within Tyndall. Alan is co-lead with Emer Kennedy (Teagasc) in Spoke 5 animal health, wherein he co-supervises two PhD students, he also co-supervises postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in Spoke 7 dairy processes with Mark Fenelon (Teagasc) and Spoke 8 digestive characteristics with Paul Cotter (Teagasc)
